Originated from this post to the WordUp MailList, Adam's Law states that:
When posting to an online forum, the probability of getting a response increases proportionally with the ease which some aspect of your post can be proved incorrect.
Or more simply, and perhaps better that:
When posting to a mailing list, the easier it is for someone to prove they are smarter than you, the more likely they are to respond.
Yes, I'm aware that there is another Adam's Law here that states "Any problems with the web are indirectly but completely and totally your own fault".
