Fixing the DVD Region "Bug"
http://www.opuscc.com/download/ From a source:
Don't think there is a patch for the UJ-815. From what I understand the firmware is encoded and very difficult to patch. The UJ-815 further protects against software decryption of the CSS library in programs such as VLC (www.videolan.org). If you have a non UJ-815 Mac this solution may work for you. Matshita has gone the extra mile to make sure that users can't make a habit of watching movies from different regions. On the bright side of things there is a frimware upgrade to change your DVD burning speed from 1x to 2x and CD burning speed from 8x to 16x. There is also a downgrade available so as not to void your warrant.

if there is a region free firmware upgrade it will likely be posted here.
