I want to do backups of my Linux system and from what I've seen dumping backups to a CD-R[W] or DVD-RAM seems to be the best option. A brief search of FreshMeat shows that there are quite a few utilities to do this so now I just have to go through and figure out which one is the best.

For large enterprise scale backups there are fewer realistic alternatives. The two best ones I know of are:
http://www.bacula.org/ (newish but looks amazing)
http://www.amanda.org/ (has been around forever)
BackUp tools based around SubVersion, looks amazing if it's mature.
http://fsvs.tigris.org/ (aims to become a complete backup/restore tool for all files in a directory tree or whole filesystems, with a subversion repository as the backend)
