It looks like it takes the raw voltages from a 10mbit ethernet cable and translates it to light pulses. That keeps the brains in the transciever to an absolute minimum. Very interesting idea - high data rate, long distance, and none of the hard-to-diagnose interference problems of point-to-point radio.
