Current event humor

Regarding American Taliban John Walker Lindh... he goes to Afganistan to study Muslim culture, joins the Taliban, fights the Northern Alliance, gets captured by them, almost dies in a prision riot, captured by the Americans, then brought to America to stand trial on near-treasonous charges.

I got to thinking about countries like Afganistan in the winter olympics... would they do the biathon with an AK-47? Or maybe just chuck a grenade at the targets?

What if Al-Queda could participate? Would they attack the targets with box cutters?

Misc humor

I was watching golf the other day, and this guy made a really long putt. You know what they did next? Played it in slow motion. This is Golf... men hitting a ball with sticks, for crying out loud. What are they checking for? Is there an foul line that I don't know about? "That made it in, just like last time Chuck..." And instead of watching a ball travel along grass for 6 seconds and fall into a hole, we watch for 14 seconds! Oooooh... the suspense!

Stolen from MrOrange: "I love the Gap! Look at these cargo pants; I got 'em for only twenty bucks! There's a lot of clothing manufacturers out there that use slave labor and sweatshops and what not, but the great thing about the Gap that sets them apart from all those other companies is that not only do they employ slave labor and sweatshops but they pass the savings on to you! Look at the quality of these pants man! Only a small child's hands could pull of stitchings these small..."

Fiction writing ideas

Kuro5hin had a great article about the idea of a death penalty for corporations (ie: Arthur Andersen) and I got to thinking about the idea of a death penalty for synthetic intellegences, and incorporated entities in the future. In the future, capital punishment for humans has been outlawed, but AIs and business institutions can be "killed" as punishment. How would you avoid just hiding a copy of the AI program until the heat blows over? How could a corporation avoid the death penalty if convicted of a capital offense?

Now that I have an Airport card and have been surfing the net from Pioneer Square and other nodes in SE, I've been thinking of the idea of a "wireless cloud" of nodes that cover a metropolitian area, as evangelised by AdamShand and Personal Telco. This is a very cool idea, but a lot of work. What kinds of technology could possibly come about that would make a painstakingly crafted WAN consisting of thousands of radio-based nodes obsolete? We will have wearable computers and participate in augmented reality, I'm convinced of that. But how will we connect to the net in 2250? I don't think it will be radio waves, but what else *is* there?
