I've actually started moving away from using MRTG and instead started playing with various RrdTool based tools. Currently my favorite is Cacti though I also keep my eye on Cricket and Orca.
In the mean time one of the most time consuming parts is actually finding or writing scripts to pull the information from whatever it is you want to monitor and get it into MRTG or RrdTool. Below are some resouces to help:
