How It Works
Executive summary: Each person needs to contribute $50-60 per year in order for this to stay afloat.
TheFutureOfSpack has been decided. Spack is now a contributor-supported service (think NPR without any government/corporate subsidies) and will continue to exist for as long as there is enough money to keep things running.
All the money that is collected goes to a fund which is only used to cover the costs of this box, no one is making a profit or even covering their own expenses or time with your money.
In order to be fair to everyone, contributing to the PledgeDrive fund is mandatory. You are welcome, and in fact encouraged, to contribute as much or as little as you can afford, however If you do not contribute for two PledgeDrives in a row your account will be deleted. If you cannot contribute but you want to keep your account please contact me (AdamShand) and I'm sure we can sort something out.
In the interests of full discolsure there are a number of people that get free accounts:
AdamShand - For sysadmin of the server
GeneMerrill - For dealing with all the yukky money stuff
Mike and John - For providing backup to Adam and keeping things running when he's either on holiday or too drunk to care.
- Erik - For hosting maus (our old server) in his basement for several years, entirely out of the kindness of his heart.
TerrySchmidt - For providing bandwidth and diskspace for my to rsync our drives to for backup purposes. 1.
- Todd - For providing backup DNS and SMTP services for all our email and web hosting needs.
1 I do not backup user home directories for privacy reasons. If you would like your home directory backed let me know and we can talk about it.
