I'm loath to admit that I'm spending time on learning M$ SharePoint (my last experiences with something MicrosoftFrontPage related were not pleasant) at work but that's the way it goes sometimes. Here are some useful docs about it all.

Alternative Software
I'm aware of many OpenSource alternatives (Drupal, MoinMoin, PHPGroupWare, etc), however the reason we ended up at SharePoint is for the ability to save files directly to the server (via WebDav) and the ability to search all types of Windows files. There are no OpenSource solutions that do this as far as I know. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Microsoft Project Server - Comes with SharePoint
Groove Networks - Works with SharePoint
- Documentum (apparently bought/merged with eRoom)
